US-based chipmaker Nvidia and Indian oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries said on March 24 that they are partnering to build advanced artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in India โ a move that will have a significant impact on the country’s AI capabilities.
Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang made the announcement on October 24, 2024, during the Nvidia AI Summit in Mumbai, in conversation with Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani.
It makes complete sense that India should manufacture its own AI. You should not export data to import intelligence,โ said Huang. He noted India’s potential to lead in AI development and added, “India should not export flour to import bread.
He also pointed out the need for localized AI infrastructure that keeps data and innovation within the country.
On the other hand, Ambani noted India’s rising presence in the global digital space. “Apart from the US and China, India has the best digital connectivity infrastructure,” he said while pointing out that AI could bring prosperity and equality to people.
“In just one year’s time, we will have nearly 20 times more computing capacities here in India than just a little over a year ago,”
Huang said about Indiaโs AI potential. On the other hand, Ambani echoed the sentiment, saying he is confident Nvidia will deliver world-class AI infrastructure, just as Reliance Jio transformed the telecom industry.
Nvidia’s collaboration with Reliance is part of a larger initiative to promote AI innovation in India.
Nvidia has also partnered with Indian companies like Tech Mahindra to develop a Hindi large language model and Flipkart for AI-driven customer service. Additionally, Nvidia is working with healthcare firms to improve patient care and productivity through AI.
The partnership builds on previous agreements between Nvidia, Reliance, and Tata to develop AI supercomputers and large language models tailored to Indian languages. Such initiatives are aimed at propelling India to the forefront of AI technology.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, Ambani had announced the launch of JioBrain, a suite of AI tools, during Reliance Industries’ shareholders meeting in August. The platform is expected to provide various AI-based services including call analysis, personalised service recommendations, fraud detection, and customer experience analytics, among others.
